If you’ve ever experienced issues with mold, you know that it’s more than just an unsightly nuisance.

Mold can silently wreak havoc on your health and property. In this extensive guide, we will delve deep into the dangers of mold, how to detect its presence, and the indispensable role of professional mold remediation services. Whether you're dealing with mold removal, mold remediation, or the costs involved, this comprehensive resource will equip you with vital knowledge to protect your Mt. Vernon, Illinois or Benton, Illinois property.

Understanding Mold

Mold, a type of fungus, serves a vital role in nature by breaking down organic matter. However, when it infiltrates our indoor spaces, it can cause a multitude of issues. Let's explore the key aspects of mold:

  • Health Risks: Exposure to mold can lead to a range of health problems. Mold spores are allergens that can trigger asthma, allergies, respiratory issues, and skin irritations.
  • Black Mold (Stachybotrys chartarum): Often dubbed "toxic black mold," this species is particularly notorious for its mycotoxins, which can lead to severe health problems when inhaled or touched.
  • Property Damage: Mold thrives on organic materials like wood, drywall, and insulation, causing structural damage and costly repairs.
  • Airborne Allergens: Mold releases allergenic proteins that can initiate allergies, even in individuals who haven't experienced them before.
  • Mold Odor: Mold produces a distinct, musty odor that permeates the environment, making your indoor space uncomfortable and unwelcoming.

Identifying Mold Damage

Early detection is crucial for effective mold remediation. In many cases, it will be necessary to call a professional mold remediation company for mold testing. Mold often grows in concealed, inaccessible areas, rendering it invisible without professional help. Here are some telltale signs of mold damage:

  • Visible Mold Growth: The most apparent indication is the presence of visible mold. It can manifest as fuzzy, discolored patches on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.
  • Musty Odor: An enduring, musty smell is a strong indicator of mold growth, even if you can't see it. This scent is a result of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by mold.
  • Water Damage History: Properties with a history of water damage, flooding, or leaks are at higher risk for mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments.
  • Health Symptoms: If occupants experience unexplained health symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, or skin irritation that improve when leaving the property, mold may be the culprit.
  • Peeling Paint or Wallpaper: Mold can cause paint or wallpaper to peel or bubble as it grows beneath these surfaces.

The Mold Remediation Process

Mold remediation is a complex, regulated process aimed at identifying, containing, and eliminating mold to ensure the safety and health of occupants. Here's an overview of the standard mold remediation process:

Mold Inspection and Assessment

Before embarking on the remediation journey, a certified mold inspector evaluates the extent of the mold damage. They identify the type of mold, its location, and the underlying moisture source that fueled its growth.

Containment

Effective containment is vital to prevent mold spores from migrating to uncontaminated areas. Professionals utilize plastic sheeting and negative air pressure machines to isolate the affected area.

Mold Removal

The next stage involves the physical mold removal. Depending on the infestation's scale, this may entail removing and disposing of materials like drywall, insulation, or carpeting. Professionals wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to stringent safety protocols throughout this phase.

Mold Cleaning and Sanitization

All surfaces within the containment area undergo thorough cleaning and sanitization, utilizing specialized equipment and antimicrobial agents to eliminate any lingering mold spores.

Drying and Dehumidification

To prevent future mold growth, experts employ industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to fully dry the affected space. Addressing the moisture source is pivotal in mold prevention.

Post-Remediation Testing

After remediation, a certified mold testing company may perform post-remediation testing to confirm the successful resolution of the mold issue and ensure safe indoor air quality.

Assessing Mold Remediation Costs

The cost of mold remediation can vary considerably based on factors such as the extent of the infestation, the type of mold, and its location within the property. Several factors may influence mold remediation costs:

  • Infestation Size: Larger mold infestations typically necessitate more extensive remediation efforts, leading to higher costs.
  • Location Complexity: Mold in confined or challenging-to-reach areas may require additional labor and equipment, impacting the overall cost.
  • Mold Type: Hazardous molds, including toxic black mold, may necessitate more elaborate safety measures, driving up costs.
  • Structural Damage: Mold that has caused structural deterioration may entail expensive repairs, such as drywall replacement or subfloor restoration.
  • Insurance Coverage: Depending on your insurance policy, a portion or the entirety of the remediation costs may be covered, reducing your financial burden.

It's crucial to remember that while mold remediation costs are a concern, the health and safety of occupants should take precedence. Cutting corners during mold remediation can result in incomplete removal and recurrent mold problems.

  • Routine Maintenance: Perform regular inspections and maintenance to spot and address potential problem areas early, before they become breeding grounds for mold.
  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure ample ventilation in moisture-prone zones like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Consider using exhaust fans and dehumidifiers if necessary.

How to Deal With Commercial Water Damage to Your Business | SERVPRO® of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties

8/11/2023 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Damage SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry is your local commercial restoration company. We will always be here to help and get you back in business.

When commercial water damage affects your building, the impact on business can be severe.

Many sources of flooding come from internal sources. Burst pipes or a badly leaking roof can shut you down or ruin interiors and destroy inventory. Damage might also come from a bathroom flooded with sewage backup. Or it could even be an entire floor of offices soaked by a broken sprinkler system.

However, water damage can also affect businesses through natural causes.

Knowing what to do before disaster strikes make recovering quickly and returning to business easier. Regardless of what source left the water behind, these helpful tips can guide you through handling the problem quickly and as stress-free as possible.

Know Your Building’s Layout

Familiarize yourself with different water cutoff points throughout your property, and ensure you know how to turn off the fire sprinkler system. Locate the main water cutoff valve, and be ready to shut off the entire building’s supply when necessary.

Several people should know this information, including members of the leadership team. This can help you reduce the amount of water that gets inside your business by cutting it off at the source.

Know the Types of Water Involved

When water damage happens, the type of water involved will determine how dangerous the situation is. Knowing what you’re dealing with makes a big difference in the safety of everyone in the building:

White water: This type of water most commonly results from plumbing problems. It’s not considered contaminated and is safe to handle yourself in small amounts.

Gray water: Sink drains and toilet tank overflows produce this type of flooding. The water is contaminated but not considered dangerous.

Black water: Sewage backups and storm flooding are common sources of highly contaminated black water. Always call in a professional to deal with this type of toxic water damage.

Take Action Quickly

Always attempt to identify and shut down the water source as soon as possible. Try to get fresh air circulating by opening windows and doors to expedite the drying and evaporation process. Then alert everyone in the building and outline the affected areas so that no one comes into contact with the water.

After taking these steps, be sure to thoroughly document any visible damage. This will help you speed through the insurance claim process and will be useful when deciding what parts of your building need the most reinforcement.

Remember to Be Patient

The visible water damage in your building is only part of the overall problem. Soaked wall studs, moldy framing and buckled flooring materials are only a few signs of hidden water damage. Any of these indicators should be red flags of potential damage.

If your business experiences water damage, call SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties for a quick response and a shoulder to lean on. Our restoration professionals have extensive training and will work with industry-leading equipment that can dry your building out and get you back into action fast.

The cleanup and drying process can take up to a week, depending on the extent of the moisture, so be patient as our restoration team works through the cleanup and sanitation before beginning repairs. We’ll have your business back to preloss condition before you know it.

When disaster strikes your commercial property, we’ll be there to help clean up and get you back in business quickly. Call SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties today at (618) 435-8200.

Before entering your home or property after a flood, prioritize safety. Ensure that the floodwaters have fully receded and it is safe to return. Be cautious of structural damage and potential electrical hazards. Wear appropriate protective gear such as rubber gloves, boots, and face masks to avoid exposure to contaminants in the water.

Step 2: Document the Damage

Once it is safe to enter your property, thoroughly document the flood damage. Take photographs or videos of all affected areas, including structural damage, personal belongings, and appliances. This documentation will be invaluable for insurance claims and aid in the restoration process.

Step 3: Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company about the flood damage as soon as possible. Provide them with all necessary details, including the extent of the damage, photographs, and videos. Understand your insurance policy and coverage to ensure you are aware of what is eligible for compensation.

Step 4: Disconnect Utilities

For safety reasons, turn off the main power supply to your property. Additionally, shut off the gas and water supplies to prevent further damage and potential hazards. Contact the appropriate utility companies if you require assistance with these procedures.

Step 5: Remove Standing Water

Begin by removing any standing water from your property. Use pumps, wet/dry vacuums, or hire professional water extraction services if necessary. Properly dispose of the water to prevent contamination and further damage.

Step 6: Dry and Ventilate the Property

After removing the standing water, it is crucial to dry out your home or property thoroughly. Open windows and doors to promote air circulation, and use dehumidifiers, fans, and heaters to expedite the drying process. Remove wet carpets, furniture, and other items that can harbor moisture.

Step 7: Clean and Disinfect

Floodwaters can introduce harmful contaminants and pathogens to your home. Clean and disinfect all affected surfaces, including walls, floors, and furniture. Use appropriate cleaning agents, wear protective gear, and follow manufacturer instructions for effective disinfection.

Step 8: Remove Damaged Materials

Inspect your property for damaged materials that need to be removed. This may include drywall, insulation, flooring, and furniture. Discard damaged items properly, following local regulations, and keep a detailed inventory of all disposed of belongings for insurance purposes.

With the damaged materials removed, assess the structural integrity of your property. Repair any structural damage, including walls, floors, and roofs, with the help of professionals if necessary. Ensure that repairs comply with building codes and regulations.

As you restore your property, take the opportunity to evaluate your flood protection measures. Protect Your Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties Home From Water Damage

4/25/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties water damage services. Call SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties for water damage remediation.

There are many ways to help protect your home in Jefferson, Franklin & Perry counties from water damages. Water losses occur when water finds its way outside of the appliances you rely on to run your household’s daily needs. When we think about the causes of severe water damage to our homes, we usually think about extreme weather like a hurricane or torrential rains. But the unfortunate reality is that extensive damage is often the result of ordinary household plumbing systems and appliances that fail – and these can be just as destructive to your home as an extreme weather event.

Preventative Measures

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to help prevent water damage from plumbing problem in your St. Charles home. It is helpful to understand some of the common causes of water damage.

These may include:

• Heating and air-conditioning systems

• Water heaters

• Valves

• Appliances

• Pipes and plumbing fixtures

How to Detect Water Damages

Water damage can often go undetected, even if the telltale signs are there. Plumbing that is housed inside the walls of your home, in less-trafficked areas like a basement or attic, or behind a cabinet or appliance, can easily go unnoticed. That’s why it’s important to check your appliances and plumbing from time to time.

  • Know where the main water supply enters your home, locate the main shut-off valve and make sure it’s functioning properly.
  • If you will be away from home for an extended period, consider shutting off the water supply, but consult with a heating professional first to understand if doing so will compromise any other systems in your home. Maintain a temperature of at least 55 degrees in your home. Also, if your home is protected by a fire sprinkler system, do not turn off the water to this system, and maintain sufficient heat to prevent a freeze-up.
  • Consider having your air-conditioning system inspected regularly by a professional. Check around the unit for indications of leaks. Check the drain lines annually and clean them if they are clogged. Change the air filter annually at a minimum.
  • Inspect water heaters, showers, tubs, toilets, sinks, dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines annually, and have them repaired if there are signs of leaks or corrosion. Be sure to include supply lines, hoses, connections and fittings in the inspection.
  • Check caulking around showers, bathtubs, sinks and toilet bases, and make repairs as needed.
  • If your refrigerator has an ice machine or water dispenser, check the hose between the wall and the refrigerator to determine if it is pinched or stressed. Also look for signs of leaking or wear and tear.
  • Check exposed plumbing (pipes, valves, etc.) for signs of leaking or corrosion. Have any pipe damage fixed immediately to prevent more costly repairs in the future.

For any questions or concerns about water damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties at (618) 435-8200

Water damage due to a plumbing issue in your home can be life-changing. But there are some common signs that homeowners can look for, and steps they can take, to help avoid a major water issue at home.

Consider this example:

A homeowner and his family head off for a three-week vacation. While they’re away, a minor toilet leak grows, until it reaches a pace of three gallons of water per minute. By the time the homeowners returned from their three-week vacation, the unaddressed leak had poured more than 30,000 gallons of water into their home. The water ruined furniture, fixtures and irreplaceable family valuables, and rendered the property virtually uninhabitable for an extended period of time.

But this is just a cautionary tale. The following guidance is meant to help you learn about the potential water issues from common plumbing problems and how you can take steps to help prevent disaster.

Causes For Plumbing Problems

Plumbing issues can occur anywhere in your home. Frequently, lack of maintenance is the root cause of these problems. However, other causes can include:

  • Manufacturing and design defects.
  • Installation errors.
  • Exposure to cleaning products (for example, by storing chemicals under the sink or by cleaning surfaces of plumbing components).

If caught early, many plumbing problems can be addressed before serious damage occurs. For this reason, regular inspection of your home’s visible plumbing parts can be critical. Knowing the lifespan of parts and appliances is also important, as is properly maintaining the other parts of your home and its features and systems.

Signs to Look For

Want to help prevent plumbing complications from damaging your home and potentially resulting in expensive property damage or loss? Start by visually inspecting your plumbing on a regular basis. Look for drips and slow leaks. Be sure to check the areas surrounding your pipes as well. If you see water damage on cabinetry or other nearby materials, there may be an active leak that you’ll want to locate.

Your entire home plumbing system may not be visible, but there are certain places in your home where you can readily inspect plumbing components:

  • Under sinks and washtubs.
  • Inside access panels near showers, sinks or appliances.
  • Attachments to toilets, water heaters and appliances.
  • Basements and crawl spaces.

You will want to look at any piping, valves and fittings in the areas listed above. Leaks are most common at connection points, so pay close attention to the plumbing connections on faucets, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, water heaters, water filtration systems, shut-off valves and toilets. Your home’s piping system may also have multiple connections between various sections of pipe. Appliances and fixtures themselves can cause problems, so be sure to inspect those as well, and keep up with any regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

The signs of a problem will vary by component. For example, problems in copper piping may look very different from problems in PEX, a common type of plastic piping. In general, you want to look for signs of corrosion, cracking, hazing, discoloration and mineral deposits from a water leak.

WATER DAMAGE

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage, you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration

Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.

Water Heater Floods a Jefferson, Franklin & Perry Counties Home

5/16/2022 (Permalink)

You’re away at work all day and then it happens….your water heater causes water damage to your home. We get calls from these types of damages every day and have a team available around the clock to make sure those problems go away.

The hazards of having a leak or large amount of water discharged from your water heater can sometimes be easily noticed and other times it may be later until you find how much damage has been done.

Things to look for:

-Routinely inspect your water heater, especially older ones as they may be more prone to failing.

- Soft or squishy floors.

-If you notice any water coming up from the seams in your flooring.

-Water in your crawl space.

It doesn’t take a lot of water to create a lot of damage to floors, subfloors and into floor joists if the problem persists long enough. With water getting trapped under you floor it may not be noticeable at first.

SERVPRO utilizes specialty equipment that isn’t in stores. This equipment expedites the removal of water to help get your home back in the dry. Box fans and small dehumidifiers that are available in retail outlets can assist in drying, however they aren’t strong enough to handle water damage. Bottom line is if the water stays longer, the more damage it can cause.

Water damage? Call us immediately for a free estimate, we also work with all insurance providers at 618-435-8200.

Commercial Fire in Benton, IL

6/3/2021 (Permalink)

A fire broke out in a Benton, IL business damaging part of the structure as well as taking on water from the fire department putting out the fire.  The business was in a total mess, from blackened walls, floors and ceiling and a layer of water that was more of a sludge from the debris on the floor.

SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin and Perry Counties was the first call the owner made after the fire. Working closely with a Commercial Insurance Adjuster we scanned the building creating a full three-dimensional walk-thru to create a fully interactive layout of the structure.  From there the team started in and worked to firstly dry out the structure and began to work on demolition. Setting equipment was essential to begin removing the smoke and soot damage to the structure as well as full cleaning on walls and ceiling where smoke damage wasn’t as heavy.

Once the structure was complete and smoke odors were removed, our construction division took over, working hand in hand with the business owner making the fixes necessary to make the building like new again and ready for business.

Though it sounds simple a lot of hard work was done to help get this business back up and running as quickly as possible without giving up any quality to ensure it was done right the first time.  For more information on our commercial services call us today at 618-435-8200.

What To Do After A Fire

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

A fire is an event you never want to plan for, however it's always best to have an emergency plan ready in case of a fire.

We get asked a lot of times how does one exactly prepare for a fire. The first part of the plan is the most important which is to designate a specific area to meet at to ensure everyone got out safely. Next make sure to call 911 to report the fire to emergency officials.

Having a detailed post-fire plan is also essential to get back into your home as soon as possible. Don't forget to make calls to cancel certain services and to order replacement items such as credit or debit cards.

Be sure to call the experts of fire damage restoration at SERVPRO to make sure they are on-site immediately to help get things rolling and get you back home as soon as possible. We work with every insurance group to offer a fast, efficient and hassle free restoration process.

Commercial Emergency Ready Profile

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Having spent most of my life dedicated to business operations I realize how easy it is to get caught up in the day-to-day aspect of keeping it running.

One thing that I constantly find is that most businesses do not have a plan in place of an emergency.  Most businesses don't train staff on what things to do to potentially save a business in face of an accident or disaster.

The importance of showing staff where the shut off for water is located in case of a water break can save your business considerable time and money.

SERVPRO has a free solution for our local businesses under our Emergency Ready Program or ERP. This includes a interactive App that pinpoints areas of interest including shut offs as well as emergency contacts to ensure your business is ready for whatever happens.  Also we are including a free Matterport scan of your business that gives you a full virtual walkthrough of your business . It helps to serve as a way to have a full visual inventory of your business as well as a way to map out points of interest.

Our ERP and Matterport scan for our local businesses is FREE! Call Gary today and schedule a time to have this setup for your business at 618-435-8200.

What to do After the Storm

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

Research has shown the majority of storm related deaths occur within the first three hours following the passing of the storm cell. A quick search of the internet will lend plenty of advice on how to prepare prior to and during the storm.

For most individuals following a storm, we want to survey the damage that our community sustained. More often than not, by going out during these moments following the storm we are elevating the danger for emergency personnel.

Follow these three steps to ensure the safety of yourself and other following a storm:

  1. Remain inside until it has been deemed safe to go out
  2. Standing water and downed powerlines should be avoided at all cost
  3. Buildings may have incurred structural damage and should be entered cautiously

The above steps will increase the safety of yourself and those around you. If in doubt, do not go out!

Frozen Pipes Bring Disaster

2/19/2020 (Permalink)

Although we have experienced an abnormally warm start to fall, the Farmer’s Almanac is warning us to prepare for an extremely brutal winter.

Cold winters are something that we do not experience all to often here in Southern Illinois, but when we do it can bring with it a whole host of issues. One of the issues that is often over looked is frozen and busted pipes.

Three tips to decrease your chance of frozen and busted pipes:

  1. Ensure you have proper insulation
  2. Keep a steady drip of water during frigid nights
  3. Maintain a warm climate within your home

These three steps you will help you to eliminate the risk of having a frozen or busted pipe. Frozen or busted pipes can cause significant damage, so precautionary steps are highly encouraged.

Chimney Checklist

12/23/2019 (Permalink)

The cold winter months are upon us and curling up by a nice cozy fire might be in the near future for many. Before you go gather wood and building a fire make sure to follow this checklist to ensure that your fireplace is safe for use.

Chimney Checklist

Inspection-

It is recommended that all homeowners have their chimneys inspected annually by a certified chimney sweep. Having your chimney inspected will ensure that there are not potential health and safety hazards.

Chimney Cap-

Always inspect your chimney cap. If your chimney cap has been damaged it can allow moisture, animals and debris to enter your flue.

Check Flashing-

If the flashing around the chimney appears to be warped or bent it could be allowing moisture and water to enter the chimney. Long term damage caused by this could include deterioration and leakage.

Trim Tree Branches-

Ensure that there are no tree branches that could potentially damage the chimney during a storm and/or cause a fire.

Repair Missing Bricks, Chipped Bricks and Mortar-

Find them. Fix them. J

Clean the Flue-

Creosote is accumulated by burning fires and is the leading cause of chimney fires. Having your chimney inspected and cleaning should eliminate any creosote buildup.

Remove Leftover Ash-

A thin layer of ash can assist with starting a fire, but a large amount of ash will choke your fire out from the moisture content.

Test Damper-

Make sure that the damper is in good working order and form a tight seal when shut. If the damper doesn’t close properly and form a tight seal it will allow outside air to mix with heated air and increase your energy cost significantly.

Install Batteries in Smoke Alarms/Detectors-

If you aren’t changing the batteries in your smoke detector out during daylight savings time, make sure that they are changed before beginning to build fires.

Store Firewood-

Be sure to store your fire wood in a ventilated area, off of the ground and away from exposure to water or moisture.

Stay warm friends! Call our office if you have any questions.

What to Do If the Oven Catches Fire

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

Watch your Food as it Cooks

It is very important to always monitor the food as you cook. Unattended cooking food in the oven is more likely to cause an unwanted house fire.

The Oven is on Fire. What do you do??

  1. If you do not have a fire extinguisher, leave the oven door closed.
  2. Turn off the oven and allow the fire to burn out on its own.
  3. If it does not go out or worsens, open windows and call 911.
  4. If it does go out, open your windows.
  5. Carefully open the oven door and remove any items that are burned. It will be smoky so be careful.
  6. Allow the smoke to clear before examining the area to determine the cause of the fire.

What is an ERP?

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

Most companies prepare for the unexpected, hence the reason most have insurance policies in place. However an insurance policy typically only comes into play after a loss has occurred. Which begs the questions, how can we be proactive in our approach?

Larger companies have develop contingency plans that upper management is aware of in the event of disaster. At SERVPRO, we work with our commercial accounts to create an Emergency Readiness Profile that even the least experienced employee can follow.

Our Emergency Readiness Profile is a tool created to more properly identify best practices to mitigating losses. Additionally it allows our crews to arrive more quickly on site; research has shown the quicker trained professionals arrive on site the less damage that your building and property will sustain.

To have your team properly prepared via an ERP, please contact our Sales Department!

Be Aware of Oven Fire Risks

12/4/2019 (Permalink)

The most common source for house fires is in the kitchen. Oven fires are very scary, but with preparation and proper care, they are easily prevented and contained.

There are several different reasons oven fires can occur.

  • Food scraps or other items residing in the bottom of your oven can lead to a fire.
  • Forgetting something in the oven can also lead to burned food, lots of smoke and in some instances, a fire.
  • Grease can splatter and cause a flame
  • The batter from food in the oven can overflow and cause a fire.
  • Some people have reported fires starting when the self-cleaning feature is turned on.

Preventative Steps to Take

  • Make sure the oven is clean before use
  • Do not leave cooking food unattended
  • When making cakes and pastries, place a slightly larger baking tray underneath your baking pan or cupcake tin
  • Put a cover on food that might splatter. When roasting, carefully drain some of the hot grease by removing the pan from the oven every half-hour or so.
  • Get your oven checked out by a professional to make sure it is working properly.

Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing!

11/29/2019 (Permalink)

FROZEN PIPE PREVENTION

Short- and Long-term solutions for low temperature plumbing problems include:

  • Locate and seal cracks and openings in the walls, attic, basement or crawlspace.
  • Weather strip and caulk around crawlspace doors and basement windows.
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated. Pay special attention to areas where pipes are located.
  • Insulate unprotected pipes and don't leave gaps. Pipe sleeves simplify the process. Keep the pieces tight against each other and seal the slits and joints with duct tape.
  • Install storm windows over basement windows or replace the old windows with energy-efficient alternatives.
  • Find your main water shutoff so you can turn off the water quickly if needed. Locations vary — look in the crawlspace or basement where the water supply enters the house, inside a water meter box directly outside the house or near the water heater.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air flow around the supply lines. Move any cleaners or other chemicals out of the reach of children.
  • Keep your thermostat at the daytime setting during the night. If you'll be away for several days during subfreezing weather, keep it set above 55° F.

Why is 24 Hour Services Important to you?

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

Damage doesn't follow time constraints

In many restoration situations, immediate action is very important, if not crucial to the salvation of your items and the severity of the damage done. Therefore, it is not possible for SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin, & Perry Counties to only operate eight hours a day.

Damage worsens quickly

Perhaps the most time sensitive form of damage is water damage.

  • Within minutes of exposure to water, your belongings and the structure of your home will begin to absorb the damaging fluids. Paper goods swell and upholstery is soaked.

This is a common side effect of every case of water damage. But when you begin to wait, things slowly go downhill...

  • In hours one to 24, drywall begins to breakdown. A musty odor will begin to appear and furniture swells and cracks.
  • In hours 24 to 48, serious biohazard contamination is possible and metal begins to rust and corrode. Many other side effects appear during this time.
  • After a week, cost increases dramatically and residents are at a serious health risk.

Be Prepared this Winter

11/21/2019 (Permalink)

Why is a Frozen Pipe a Concern?

  • When water begins to freeze, it expands. This can cause both plastic and metal pipes to burst, possibly leading to significant water damage to your home or business.
  • Since water expands when it freezes, it puts unwanted pressure on pipes.
  • As water freezes, the force exerted from the expansion can cause a pipe to burst, regardless of the strength of the material.
  • You may not know you have a burst pipe as the water has turned to ice. Once the temperature starts to warm and thawing begins, leaking and flooding can occur.

Thanksgiving Day

11/21/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for fire departments when it comes to home fires involving cooking equipment? With more home cooks cooking larger meals than they are probably used to, the number of home fires involving cooking equipment spikes to nearly 4 times the daily average on Thanksgiving! Whether you plan to be in charge of the kitchen or are just helping out, be sure to follow these important safety tips when preparing this year's Thanksgiving feast!

  • Start your Thanksgiving with a clean stove and oven! The weekend before Thanksgiving, remove any food or grease buildup from burners, stove tops, and the oven.
  • Always stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top. While items in the oven may not require as attentive an eye, food on the stove top should have constant monitoring in case of spillage or splatter.
  • Stay in the home while cooking the turkey. You don't need to set up camp and keep a constant eye on the turkey once it's in the oven, but you should stay inside and check on it frequently. The last thing you want is a burnt turkey that sets your kitchen on fire!
  • Keep a flame-resistant oven mitt, potholder, or lid near your cooking space so that you can smother any flames before they get out of control.
  • Should an oven fire occur, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. This should allow the fire to burn out on its own. Once the fire has gone out, open your windows before carefully opening the oven door to release the smoke.
  • Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and that your family knows the fire escape route in the event of a fire. Remember to always plan TWO WAYS OUT of every room.
  • Avoid using turkey fryers, but if you must, make sure to follow the fryer's instructions. Also be sure to completely thaw the turkey before frying and always fry outside at a safe distance from the home.

Stay safe this holiday season! Should your home experience any fire damage, be sure to call SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin, & Perry Counties  to make that fire "Like it never even happened."

Three SERVPRO Vehicles in front of Trees SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin, & Perry Counties is "ready for any sized disaster."

As you go to turn on your furnace for the first time, don't just turn it on and leave the house with full trust in your furnace. It is important to ensure your home is safe. with a well-maintained furnace. It is best practice to take the following steps before you start running the heat: 1. Is there a smell? When turning on your furnace on for the first time since last winter, you may smell a burning smell. This is usually from dust that settled in over the summer. This is not uncommon, but if the smell lingers for over two hours, or a fire has resulted, calls for help immediately.  2. What is the current carbon monoxide detector reading? If you don’t have a carbon dioxide detector in your home or business already, it is important to get one and have it ready in your home. After turning on your furnace for the first time, if the alarm goes off, take protective measures by opening the windows and getting out of the house if they are too high. 3. Is the furnace making any unusual noises? If your furnace makes unusual noises when turning it on for the first time, find the root of the problem and get it fixed to help prevent a fire in your home or business. Be safe and stay warm!

What Should You Do Before a Storm?

10/6/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing for a storm can be intimidating, let us give you some tips to make the process a lot easier for you.

Before The Storm:

  1. Build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  2. Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  3. Postpone outdoor activities.
  4. Remember the 30/30 Lighting Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lighting, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  5. Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  6. Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lighting strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  7. Remember, rubbed-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lighting. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  8. Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  9. Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

October Means HALLOWEEN!

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

Halloween is for costumes, candy and fun! No one wants their fun to be spoiled by a fire! SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin, & Perry Counties wants everyone to have a fun and safe time this Halloween! We have a list of safety tips below provided by the National Fire Prevention Association.

  • Candles - Refrain from having an open flame. Use battery-operated candles or glow-sticks in your jack-o-lanterns.
  • Costumes - Choose the right costume. Stay away from long or flowing fabric, and skip extraneous costume pieces.
  • Decorations - Avoid flammable decorations including dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper that are highly flammable. Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Exits - Remember to keep all decorations away from doors so that they are not blocking any exits or escape routes.
  • Smoke alarms - Make sure all your smoke alarms are working and up to date.
  • Visibility - Provide flashlights to children or have them carry glow sticks as part of their costumes. Make sure if a child is wearing a mask that the eye holes are large enough to see out of them.

SERVPRO of Jefferson, Franklin, & Perry Counties wishes everyone a fun and safe Halloween!
